INDICATIONS

Pharmacokinetics
Benzylpenicillin develops a bactericidal effect by inhibiting cell wall synthesis in susceptible bacteria. Its main action spectrum are positive cocci, especially streptococci of groups A, B, C, G, H, L and M, pneumococci and penicillinase-producing staphylococci. The action of benzylpenicillin covers other sensitive microorganisms as Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Treponema pallidum, Clostridium, Actinomyces bovis, Bacillus anthracis, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Listeria and Leptospira.
Crystalline Penicillin is absorbed rapidly from the injection site, obtaining serum between 15 and 30 minutes after administration. Procaine benzylpenicillin is released within 12 to 24 hours continuously from the injection site. Thus, the association of these penicillins allow to achieve rapid and sustained levels in blood and tissues.
About 60% of penicillin binds to plasma proteins with a wide distribution to tissues and body fluids. The eyes, and meninges penetration is limited, however, inflammation increases the amount of benzylpenicillin that crosses the blood brain barrier.
Penicillin is excreted in breast milk and is eliminated by glomerular filtration and tubular secretion by the kidney.
CONTRAINDICATIONS
Hypersensitivity to penicillin, interstitial nephritis, angioneurotic edema, serum sickness, anaphylactic shock.
