THIS IS A BRAND MEDICATION
THERAPEUTIC INDICATIONS: Imodium ® is indicated for the symptomatic control of acute and chronic diarrhea. In patients with ileostomy can be used to reduce the number and volume of discharges and to increase consistency.
CONTRAINDICATIONS: IMODIUM ® is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to loperamide hydrochloride or any of the other carriers.
IMODIUM ® should not be used as primary treatment: In patients with acute dysentery, which is characterized by thepresence of blood in the stool and high fever in patients with acute ulcerative colitis in patients with bacterialenterocolitis caused by invasive organisms including Salmonella , Shigella and Campylobacter and in patients withpseudomembranous colitis associated with broad spectrum antibiotics.
In general, Imodium ® should not be used when there is need to avoid the inhibition of peristalsis due to possible risk of significant sequelae including ileus, megacolon and toxic megacolon. IMODIUM ® should be discontinued immediatelywhen developing constipation, abdominal distension or subileus.
Treatment of diarrhea with Imodium ® may only be symptomatic. Whenever an underlying cause is determined, specific treatment should be given when appropriate (or as indicated).
RESTRICTIONS OF USE DURING PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING: Do not use during pregnancy and lactation.
Pregnancy: Although there is no evidence that IMODIUM ® possesses embryotoxic or teratogenic properties, like otherdrugs, their use should be avoided during pregnancy especially during the first quarter at least as clinically warranted.
Breastfeeding: There were small amounts of drug detected in the milk of a nursing mother, so its use in these cases is not recommended
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION: Oral.
Adults and children over 12 years:
Acute diarrhea: Initial dose is 2 tablets (4 mg) and 1 tablet (2 mg) for children, followed by one tablet (2 mg) after each bowel movement.
Chronic diarrhea: The initial dose is 2 tablets (4 mg) per day for adults and 1 tablet (2 mg) per day for children: the initial dose should be adjusted until only 1 to 2 bowel movements per day,which is usually achieved with a maintenance dose of 1 to 6 tablets (2-12 mg) per day.
Adults: They do not require dose adjustment.
Renal failure: No dose adjustment is required in case of kidney failure.
Liver failure: Although no pharmacokinetic data in patients with hepatic impairment, Imodium® should be used with caution in these patients because they have a decreased first pass metabolism.
